Jackson

Kathy Abline, Anne Alberta and Roxane Southcott-Roberts sing Christmas carols during a Victorian holiday celebration in Jackson.

Jackson Township is a community with a rich history beginning in the 1600s. The names of the earliest 25 pioneer families, who settled in the area in the first 10 years of Jackson's existence (1665-1675), are still familiar because their descendants still reside in the town.

Agriculture was the main industry in Jackson prior to 1955. When the Garden State Parkway reached Ocean County in the 1950s, opening up the opportunity for many with North Jersey employment to move out of the congested cities, many people relocated their families to the Jackson area and commuted to work in the north. In the '60s land development shifted from agricultural to residential.

Today Jackson continues to be an ever-growing commuter community, while maintaining a rural feel. Jackson looks back with pride over its 330 years of European settlement and its 150 years of development as an incorporated municipality, watching the population grow from 1,330 residents in 1844 to an estimated 42,816 in 2000.
