Freehold Township, formally established in 1693, surrounds Freehold Borough, and is one of the three original townships in the county.
Residents enjoy a quality of life that is enhanced by 14 parks, including Monmouth County's Turkey Swamp Park.
In addition, the township has an award-winning Parks and Recreation Department, a fully staffed recycling center and an aggressive street maintenance program.
In recent years, the township has constructed a senior center, an addition to the 220-acre Michael J. Tighe Park, a memorial arboretum, and a 9/11 memorial at the municipal complex.
It is also home to the oldest, continuously operating, daytime harness racetrack in the country, Freehold Raceway, and to the largest shopping mall in the region, Freehold Raceway Mall.
In addition, the large township is home to Brookdale Community College's western campus and a full-service hospital, CentraState Medical Center.
