Located in the center of Monmouth County, Colts Neck has retained much of its rural character throughout the years. Originally incorporated as Atlantic Township in 1847, the name of the township was changed to Colts Neck in 1963.
A longtime farming community, Colts Neck was once the location of the North American Phalanx (1844-55), a productive utopian agricultural settlement. It still remains the location of Laird & Co., a commercial distillery since 1851, famous for an applejack recipe developed in 1698.
Colts Neck is also the location of Naval Weapons Station Earle, which was first commissioned in 1943.
