Ocean County
Ocean County is one of four New Jersey counties along the Atlantic Ocean. Ocean was set apart from the southern reaches of Monmouth County on Feb. 15, 1850. Toms River, a pre-Revolutionary War settlement dating from 1664, is the county seat and is now a quaint village in Dover Township; its downtown area still retains the Colonial flavor of its seafaring heritage.
Ocean County's natural advantages and its close proximity to major metropolitan areas have contributed to the county's dramatic population growth. Originally home to the Leni Lenape Indians of the Delaware Nation, there were only 10,043 people in the county in 1850. In 1950 the population stood at 56,622. The next 50 years saw an astonishing growth when in 2000 the population estimate was 510,916. An important aspect of Ocean County's growth has been the development of retirement communities.
Summer vacationers and the resort industry are a major source of business, due to Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, many miles of sandy white beaches, and the popularity of canoeing, camping and hiking in the county's Pinelands.
